With the laying of the foundation stone of a palace on the Spree Island in Berlin a complex struggle over space began. It is a history of construction and deconstruction, of conversion and aesthetical reshaping, of decay and devastation, of new development, demolition and reconstruction. The architecture always mirrored the particular societal conditions,
the claim to power and representative ambitions, as well as ideological, political and economical interests.
„The Architects“ takes into focus the recorded master builders and architects, who have shaped this space: Konrad Krebs, Caspar Theiss, Rochus Graf zu Lynar, Johann Arnold Nering, Andreas Schlüter, Johann Eosander von Göthe, Martin Heinrich Böhme, Karl Friedrich Schinkel, Friedrich August Stüler, Albert Dietrich Schadow, Heinz Graffunder and Franco Stella. Their principals went down in history with their forenames until the 20th century.
